What Is FPS in Airsoft?
FPS stands for feet per second and measures how fast a BB leaves the barrel of an airsoft gun. It is the most common velocity unit in the UK and US, and it is what most chronographs display by default. A gun that reads 350 FPS fires a BB that travels roughly 350 feet in the first second of flight.
FPS only describes speed, not energy. Two guns can share the same FPS but hit with different force depending on BB weight — for power you need joules. If you want muzzle energy instead of raw velocity, use the FPS to joule calculator.
FPS to m/s (Metres Per Second)
Most of Europe measures airsoft velocity in metres per second (m/s) rather than FPS. Fields in Germany, France, Italy and much of the EU set their chrono limits in m/s, so converting is essential when you read a foreign field’s rules or buy a replica rated in metric units.
To convert FPS to m/s, multiply by 0.3048. So 328 FPS is almost exactly 100 m/s, a figure you will see constantly on European fields because it lines up neatly with a 1 joule limit on a 0.20 g BB.
- 300 FPS ≈ 91.4 m/s
- 328 FPS ≈ 100 m/s
- 350 FPS ≈ 106.7 m/s
- 400 FPS ≈ 121.9 m/s
FPS to mph and km/h
Miles per hour and kilometres per hour are not standard airsoft units, but players often convert to them out of curiosity — a BB at 350 FPS is genuinely moving at around 238 mph, faster than a Formula 1 car. To convert FPS to mph, multiply by 0.6818; for km/h, multiply by 1.0973.

Metric Field Limits (m/s to FPS)
If a European field publishes its limit in m/s, here is the equivalent FPS so you can set your gun on a chrono that reads in feet per second. Divide m/s by 0.3048 to convert back to FPS.
| m/s | FPS | Typical limit |
|---|---|---|
| 90 m/s | 295 FPS | CQB / indoor |
| 100 m/s | 328 FPS | Common AEG cap (~1 J) |
| 110 m/s | 361 FPS | Outdoor AEG |
| 120 m/s | 394 FPS | DMR |
| 130 m/s | 427 FPS | Bolt-action sniper |
Always confirm the exact limit and chrono BB weight with your local field before an event — see airsoft FPS limits by country for a full breakdown.
FPS Conversion Formulas
Every airsoft velocity unit is a simple multiple of feet per second:
m/s = FPS × 0.3048 · mph = FPS × 0.6818 · km/h = FPS × 1.0973
To go the other way, divide by the same factor — for example, FPS = m/s ÷ 0.3048. The converter above does all of this in both directions automatically.
How to Use This FPS Converter
- Type a number into the Speed box.
- Pick the unit you are starting from — FPS, m/s, mph or km/h.
- Read the equivalent value in all four units instantly.
- Switch the input unit to convert metric field limits back into FPS for your chrono.
